The Broken Plate Pendant Co.
Baltimore
Giving new life to old plates
Juliet Ames is a Baltimore, MD crafter who has enjoyed getting her hands dirty and making things since she was a small child. While she played with Lego’s and Play-Doh she would have never dreamed that one day she would break plates for a living!
Juliet’s first project out of college was a simple mosaic mailbox. She finally had found a purpose for all of the plates that she collected from thrift shops. When the mailbox was complete Ames was left with a pile of broken plate shards that were begging for a new purpose. She wrapped one in solder and made a pendant out of it. Instantly, she began getting orders for more. She began The Broken Plate Pendant Co. in September 2006 and with encouragement from her friends in the crafting community, Ames did her first craft show in November 2006. She has been hooked on breaking plates ever since.
Although breaking funky vintage dishes is a large chunk of business, The Broken Plate Pendant Co. has evolved to cater to more custom work. Ames soon discovered that broken plate shards hold a lot of sentimental value for many people. Being able turn the broken pieces of a shattered family dish or wedding plate into little wearable heirlooms to give to family members has been one of the most rewarding parts of her job.
Ames work has been featured in magazines such as Smart Woman, Urbanite, Baltimore Magazine, and Style. Broken Plate Pendants are currently in wardrobe at the Rachael Ray Show and was worn by Rachael Ray on 30 Minute Meals.
