oh, Tax Day

Ugh. Taxes. That's all there is to say about that. But it is nice to know somebody is having some fun with them. I spotted this over at DudeCraft yesterday...artist Nava Lubelski created this piece, aptly named 1998 Tax File, from shredded and rolled tax forms, receipts, deposit slips, and pay stubs. That is some grand recycling.

Materials Monday: Nick Gentry

Need some inspiration to get your week started? Check out these awesome paintings by Nick Gentry (spotted via DudeCraft).
Nick paints these fabulous portraits on old floppy discs... some materials reuse so lovely that I really want to hang one on my walls...

I love how the grid of disks creates such a natural canvas, with different colored plastics and labels showing through, and carefully crafted compositions that place the portraits eyes right on the metallic elements of the disks.

Nick takes donations of old disks to turn into art, which is an awesome way to keep up supplies of media that I imagine will become harder and harder to find in the coming years. And, as he puts it, "your stuff could be in a gallery rather than a landfill." I don't know about you, but I still have stacks (yes, stacks) of floppy disks waiting to be turned into some ingenious project... maybe I'll send them off to Nick instead.

Shop of the Week: Dolan Geiman
I've had a crush on Dolan Geiman's art for a long, long time, and I don't have words for how excited I am that he's a member of cosa verde.
As someone smitten with little birds and old, weathered wood (yes, I have a closetful, waiting for me to turn it into something), his beautiful found object work just makes me smile.
And I'm thrilled that his eco-friendliness goes beyond just upcycling--he makes a point of using earth-friendly and sustainable practices in the productions of his prints as well. Lovely.

sustainable art: groundwork

I really love these pieces by groundwork. They make me feel like spring, and now I want to go out for a walk in the nature preserve near our house.
Unfortunately, my spring has been looking more like this lately:

All the pieces available for sale in groundwork's Etsy shop are prints of original drawings, printed on chlorine-free paper. And she plants trees for every purchase!

enchanted forest

OK, I'm sure everyone has already seen this over on design*sponge, but I just had to share it here as well, probably because it combines so many of my favorite things: old wood, old brass, and old type. And, of course, trees.
This magical forest is just one piece in an impressive portfolio by newly graduated artist, Lizzie Thomas.

speaking of trees

Ethereal is not a word I ever thought I'd use to describe toilet paper tubes, but after seeing these amazing papercuts by artist Yuken Teruya I feel comfortable with the word. Magical, ethereal toilet paper tubes. From his website:
"Cutting trees out of paper bags and cardboard toilet paper rolls, he creates meticulous and intricate art works, small and enchanting worlds, which relate to broader concerns. In each bag and roll, the shape of a tree is created without adding or removing anything, just by cutting out and folding the paper from the bag itself. Teruya’s works explore issues such as the growing consumerism of contemporary society, depleting natural resources and other problems associated with globalism, including the threat it poses to localized cultural traditions and identities."

Bridges letterpress print on Rives (tree free!) paper
I love the illustrations of Josh Cochran. I was lucky enough to work with Josh on a mural for a space I designed for a local science museum, and he is such a pleasure. It seems like his work is popping up everywhere these days, and I can understand why. Just look at these prints, some of which he has available for sale on his website.
